Trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo o TOC es un trastorno de ansiedad. El significado es que los pensamientos son recurrentes y conductas que son repetitivas. Muchos de estos pensamientos y comportamientos no deseados por la víctima, pero no se puede detener.
Por ejemplo, una persona que padece TOC puede estar obsesionado con la comprobación de su casa para asegurarse de que todos los aparatos estén apagados antes de salir cada vez. En lugar de tratar de ignorar el impulso de la comprobación de cada aparato cinco veces antes de salir, el paciente con TOC da en caso contrario, causa ansiedad. Este comportamiento se convierte en un ritual y la víctima o bien sigue esta rutina de cada día antes de salir de la casa o busca la ayuda de un profesional.
